Every visit makes you feel young again. And children are well looked after too. Cycling round the island, never knowing when you might have to swerve to avoid bunny rabbits or lizard. Watching movies in Cinema Paradiso, counting Saturn’s rings in the Observatory. Deciding between sixty flavours of ice cream. Eleven types of pillow. Five hundred different wines. Three to nine bedroom villas. And nine dining options too.
If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple: No news, no shoes. No pretensions either. Now open, a floating villa concept Soneva in Aqua and a treasure trove children’s Den.
Some of the most fantastic experiences in life are born on a whim. In many ways, it was such serendipity that led us to Soneva Fushi. We dreamed of a castaway island to call our own, a home where nature's beauty reigned and the everyday world was but a distant memory.
We scoured the globe looking for a place that spoke to us. And when we heard the whisper of the palm fronds and the murmur of the waves on Soneva Fushi, it was the love song to end all love songs.
The Maldives are one of the most mysterious countries on earth. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, its tiny islets shimmer like strings of pearls on sapphire sea. In total, 26 rings – or atolls – dot over 90,000 square kilometers of sea.
Across this huge expanse the islands (over a thousand tiny slivers of sand and greenery) all together comprise only 298 square kilometers of land. Ours is one of the largest, cloaking us in rich emerald nestled in a turquoise lagoon. Stretching 1,400 metres north to south and 400 metres wide, its Dhivehi name is Kunfunadhoo, but we lovingly call it "Soneva Fushi', a marriage of our names – Sonu and Eva – with the Dhivehi word for island, "Fushi".
Vast, multi-bedroom luxury villas and private residences are hidden among dense foliage within touching distance of a pristine, Biosphere UNESCO protected coral reef. Intuitive service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers who know what you want before you want it.

Glass Studio, Boutique and Gallery
Watch world-renowned glass artists create objects of art, participate in art exhibitions, learn the art of glass blowing in special courses and interactive events, or even personally design your own masterpiece to take home at the Maldives’ first glass studio.
Only waste glass materials produced from resorts in the local area are used at the facility. Making beautiful glass objects is not just a unique and fun experience, you also help to eliminate glass waste in the Maldives by turning them into valuable works of art.
Gazing at the stars from out here in the midst of the ocean, far from the lights of civilization, we were amazed at how much could be seen with just the naked eye. And so we were inspired to take it to the next level.
Peer through the lenses of our state-of-the-art telescope and set your eyes upon the Plough of Saturn and its serene, translucent curves. Count the moons of Jupiter. Take advantage or our remote island locale, and see celestial bodies invisible from Europe and much of the world.
Waves lap at the shore. Breezes rustle the treetops. And stars shine on screen and overhead. We invite you to join a classic film screening in our open-air theatre. Lie back in your cushioned lounger atop the beach and immerse yourself in the magic of Cinema Paradiso.
Complimentary popcorn and over 60 flavours of ice cream are the perfect comforting munchies for our on-the-sands theatre experience. And should you desire a chilled cocktail, or something more substantial, our cinema hosts will be happy to oblige.
One of the facets that attracted us to the Maldives was the richness of colour and life beneath the waves. And in fact, they were lucky enough to secure an island in the nation's most breathtaking stretch for scuba diving. Our very own Baa Atoll was recently named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its tremendously high biodiversity, even compared to the rest of the Maldivian waters.
Our professional scuba diving instructors will guide you around more than 30 unbelievable sites with visibility up to 35 metres. From June to November you will have the chance to dive in some of the best spots in the world for seeing the graceful manta rays. And with some luck you may see whale sharks.
- Discover Scuba (basic theory, basic excersises and one shore dive)
- Resort Course (four dives, one theory and logbook)
- PADI Scuba Diver (five dives, book, theory, logbook and certification)
- PADI Open Water (eight lessons, book, five theory, table, logbook and certification)

Scuba diving courses at the Soleni Dive Center at Soneva Fushi:
Equipment can also be rented.
We will always remember the first time we dipped below the surface of our lagoon and spied the palaces of colour and thriving denizens who glide between their spires and fans. Share our joys of discovering this realm just moments from shore. At anytime throughout your stay, you are welcome to borrow the complimentary masks and fins and explore the magic of our house reef.
For adventures a bit further afield, our marine biologist will be happy to guide you to most unforgettable snorkelling spots of the Baa Atoll. A personal favourite – swimming with manta rays at Hanifaru bay as they migrate through from June to November. Additionally, with some luck you may see whale sharks.
For an extremely unique encounter, allow our marine biologist to guide you snorkelling in the dark to see the Maldivian reefs in the rarest way. Peer through the night waters at moray eels, lion fish, octopus, lobsters, sleeping parrotfish and bioluminescent plankton.
We envisioned Soneva Fushi as an island of dreams – for all ages – so while creating a new children's club we sought out the input of our smallest guests. Drawing inspiration from their childlike wonder, The Den is a playground for the imagination. Children explore a pirate ship, two swimming pools, a children's mocktail bar, lego room, dress-up area, cinema, library, learning area, music room filled with instruments, and the Tunnel. A 14-metre channel clad in roots, branches and hidden surprises, it will lead children to gardens filled with flowers, swings and nests tucked into the trees.
During family time, parents can even head over to The Den with their little ones to enjoy their very own shallow pool.
Of course the entire island and surrounding sea is a wonderland for families to enjoy together. Watch for dolphins on our traditional dhoni sailboat. Let our astronomer share star-gazing secrets before bedtime.
- Father and son picnic and mother and daughter spa
- Cooking class for children and families
- Family dolphin cruise
- Marine biologist snorkeling
- Family picnics to deserted island
- Kayaking and water-sports
Some recommended family activities at Soneva Fushi:
Dotting the Indian Ocean, far from any mainland shore, the Maldives have developed an intriguing culture like nowhere else on earth. Shaped by life on the sea, touched by Islamic traders who brought their own rich traditions, the Maldivian people exhibit a warmth and strength of character that speak to us and lend their wealth of knowledge to our day-to-day life on this castaway island.
Passing dhonis, the traditional Maldivian sailboats with their graceful curving prows, are a familiar sight and offer a glimpse at the seafaring culture of our home. Many of our hosts come from nearby islands and would be proud to show your family around, teaching everyone a few words of the Dhivehi tongue along the way.
- Learn Maldivian history with a trip to the Kudarikilu island museum
- Ancestral dinner
- Maldivian cooking class
- Sustainable fishing
- Visit Baa Atoll Island by dhoni
Some recommended cultural activities at Soneva Fushi:
The romance of the sparkling horizon stirs something with Soneva Fushi. Staring out into the distance of the Maldivian waters, we hearken back to the days of sea exploration, of places uncharted. We invite you to set sail on your own voyages of discovery to deserted islands and local villages.
Camp on a private sandbank beneath the wide Maldivian skies. Catch the sun's first illuminations over the Indian Ocean as you share a gourmet breakfast for two. Sunbathe and snorkel on an uninhabited island. Embark on a fishing expedition and then let our chefs teach you how to make Maldivian curry with your glorious catch. Find out what local life is really about as you stroll the white sand lanes of a tiny village, then set out on a traditional wooden dhoni for a dolphin safari.
- Private picnic on a desert island
- Robinson Crusoe castaway picnic
- Sunset Cruise by sailing dhoni
- Private sandbank overnight experience
- Island hopping by dhoni
Some recommended out-of-this-world excursions from Soneva Fushi:
Midnight desserts in the lunar glow? A family lunch where the children plan the menu and have it served by the pool – or perhaps in the tree house? A romantic gathering of sensual flavours on a private terrace for two?
As we designed each villa type, we lavished their architecture with an abundance of decks, terraces, sprawling verandahs and open-air courtyards. Take advantage of your tropical living spaces with breakfast, lunch, dinner or late-night treats in the intimacy of your villa. Choose from the overflowing pages of our in-villa dining menu, or imagine a meal of your very own and ask our chefs to bring it to life.
Ever Soneva So Down to Earth
The sharing of food is a primal bonding ritual. Families around a home table, tribes around a fire, kin around a hearth. We sought to recreate this intimacy with dishes designed for sharing.
In one of the world's most exquisite destinations, cherish in a sense of togetherness as you and your loved ones share in a mouth watering spread of crowd-pleasing dishes.
Named after Chef Sobah, the ‘Best Chef in the Maldives’ award winner, Sobah’s is a traditional Maldivian restaurant located on an uninhabited island only 15 minutes away by speedboat from Soneva Fushi.
The cuisine is uniquely Maldivian with modern twists, and is prepared using traditional cooking methods. The beach restaurant seats only 18 for dinner and is open two nights per week, subject to a minimum number of diners. On completion of the dinner, guests will be given an introduction to the starry night sky from our resident astronomer, while enjoying some of our finest digestives. A not-to-be-missed experience.
By the Beach
The feeling of soft sand between the toes is, we believe, one of life's greatest simple pleasures. Feel connected to nature as you savour an open-air candlelit dinner at your seaside table set in the sand, beneath the stars.
Linger over Japanese and Korean inspired cuisine to the sound of rolling waves. Feast on sashimi and sushi fresh from the ocean. Just-plucked ingredients from our island gardens complete each dish. Lounge amidst the tropical splendour and endless night sky as you savour the flavours at their source.
Fresh in the Garden
Fresh picked delights from nature bring back memories of childhood – Midsummer strawberry picking, twisting dandelions in hand. In Soneva Fushi's eternal summer, Fresh in the Garden rekindles these sensations from a very lofty perch.
Surrounded by tropical banana trees, this restaurant without walls rises above our herb and vegetable garden with sublime panoramas stretching beyond. Enjoy a long, leisurely meal of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, prepared with freshly plucked produce from your surroundings.
They aim to anticipate our guests’ desires. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “Nothing succeeds like excess.” In that spirit we have gone delightfully overboard for you at the culinary heart of our island. Mihiree Mitha means “Here it is”, and almost any dish you crave is here.
The day begins with a bounty of just-baked goodies, two dozen imported cheeses, eggs any way you like, a treasure chest of homemade jams and fresh fruits… luscious mango, papaya, passionfruits. For lunch or dinner, choose from the freshest sushi and sashimi, organic salads, wood-fired pizzas, grilled fish, delectable tandoori. For a sweet finish, more than 60 homemade ice creams and sorbets await, including unexpected flavours like honeycomb and rosemary, piña colada and chocolate-lemongrass.
By the Bar
We have long embraced the spirit of laid-back luxury. The finest champagnes paired with bare feet in the sand. A long, healing spa treatment followed by a premium liqueur – because why not?
By the Bar exemplifies this casual approach. An oasis of calm, Soneva Fushi's main bar is a relaxed shelter of trestled wooden beams where one of the Maldives' best selections of spirits awaits.
The Wine Cellar
We believe the mark of any great home is a fantastic wine cellar. As we built Soneva Fushi as our island home (yes it was our personal Robinson Crusoe hideaway before we expanded the "estate" to host guests), we made sure to create a cave that rivalled the world's finest wine collections.
The collection: rare champagnes, grand cru clarets, vintage cognacs, organic and biodynamic wines. Before any dinner, our sommelier would be happy to descend with you to the subterranean wine cellar and show you around our collection of 7,000 bottles as he helps you pick your evening's selection.
Tastings throughout each week tempt your palate with flights of unique wines, paired with a delectable assortment of amuse-bouche and interactive discussions guided by our sommelier.
Tipples by the ripples. Lie back on a cushioned hammock suspended over the Indian Ocean, cocktail in hand, and watch the dance of fish schooling beneath the waves. Look out for bottlenose or spinner dolphins frolicking in the sunset, or perhaps a majestic sea turtle gliding past just beyond arm's reach.
Marrying nature and nurture, we created Bar(a)bara as a passionately charged retreat to foster romance or a feeling of warmth – with all the aquatic beauty of the Maldives literally at your feet. Soak in the setting with creative cocktails, fresh squeezed juices of organic fruits just picked from the tree or vine, luscious wines, cold beers and Soneva Fushi's own crystal enhanced wellness waters.
When we created Soneva Fushi, we took the opportunity to seize a playground for our imaginations. It was our place to break the rules, to delve into fantasies, to relive childhood wonder. As such, we encourage you to dream up your own experiences.
Picnic on a private island and let us deliver you by speedboat. Nestle away in the jungle of Soneva Fushi. Pick the spot that piques your own fancy and craft a menu of your desires with our executive chef. Of course, you will probably want to accompany it with a little passion from the vine; select sips from our 7,000 bottle subterranean wine cellar.
Allevaiate mental stress and pay close attention to your body through dentle postures and the ancient Indian practice of Yoga.
